Fireplace Fenders in Iron and Brass For Ornate Decoration By The Home Fire

One item of fireplace ware that has long decorative traditions is the fender. While fenders may have a practical purpose in preventing embers spilling too far forward, the creators brief has normally been: "adorn the fireplace with an artistic fender."
Fenders come in all sizes, from very small and minimal, to large custom made fenders with seats. If you have a very large walk in fireplace with no seats, then maybe that custom fender with sear is an option.
Mostly, though, fenders are not elaborate in size, but in ornateness. they will normally be about the width of the open fire. They will be laid across the hearth in front of the fire, so too narrow and they will look out of place, and embers may slip by. Too big and, depending on the style of hearth, may not fit or will look out of proportion. Remember, though, fenders are primarily a home decor feature, so you will be looking for style attractive style and an ornate design that fits well with your other fireplace and room decor.

The fenders I remember from my days in England were all cast iron, mostly similar to the first pictured fender above. The one shown is an antique looking fender, with ornate finials, but in this case it was designed for a gas log fire.
Your fender need not be cast iron, though, which is just as well as dark iron may not go well with your room decor. Other choices do present themselves, and the second illustration is a solid brass fender with long urn rail of over four feet. The use of brass in fenders can look good in more modern decor styles of homes. The last picture, though, returns to the more traditional iron, and a wilderness scene is created across this rustic ash guard.
