Stained glass fireplace screen, Wisteria

It is difficult not to be impressed by the beauty of stained glass; that is, stained glad produced by a real craftsmen. Stained glass combines the skills of engineer and artist, so the end result will depend on the quality of that input. More often than not, though, the results are stunning, a joy to behold for those who watch the glass and its pictures through varying light. Most of us, I am sure, immediately associate stained glass with churches, and especially the great gothic cathedrals of England and the rest of Europe.

Many of England's stained glass treasures were lost , or at least damaged, during the Reformation. Some remain, but stained glass regained its appeal and popularity in the 19th century, and was commonly used in English windows for middle and upper class Victorian houses. Stained glass has a long history since Roman times, and you can read more on Wikipedia's stained glass write up.

The association of stained glass, though, is not solely associated with religion, it has never been used exclusively in churches and cathedrals. The potential beauty of the art form presents many opportunities around the home for those who want the magic of stained glass as part of their decor. One of its main uses in home decor is in fireplace screens. As you can see from the pictures on this page, an artist and glass engineer can create works of great decorative beauty on what used to be a mundane part of the home: the hearth.

The three pictures we show are all of stained glass fireplace screens decorated with paintings celebrating the beauty of nature. As you can see, the effects are all very different, and as the day passes, and the light in the room goes through many transitions, the pictures will change as the light catches the screen's panels. These stained glass fire screens are not for use when the fire's on, just for decorative purposes at other times.
